Geopolymer Concrete




Geopolymer concrete is made by waste materials such as fly ash or slag from iron and metal production are used, which helps lead to a cleaner environment. The use of this concrete helps to reduce the wastes and also reduces carbon emission by reducing Portland cement demand.

Composition of Geopolymer Concrete

Ø  Fly ash
Ø  GGBS
Ø  Fine aggregates and
Ø  Coarse aggregates
Ø  Catalytic liquid system (CLS): It is an alkaline activator solution (AAS) for GPCC.  It is a combination of solutions of alkali silicates and hydroxides, besides distilled water.

Properties of Geopolymer Concrete

Mechanical property of Geopolymer Concrete

Ø  Geopolymer concrete will get its strength faster than Ordinary Portland cement concrete. Compressive strength of Geopolymer Concrete have been found up to 70 MPa.

 Other Properties of Geopolymer Concrete

Ø  Heat of hydration is low compared to other cement concrete.
Ø  It has very low permeability thus corrosion of reinforcement steels can be avoided compared to other cement concrete.
Ø  Drying shrinkage is much less compared to other cement concrete therefore thick and heavily restrained concrete structures can be made.
Ø  This concrete has found very high acid resistance under exposure of 2-10% of sulphuric acids.
Ø  It has good fire resistance compared to OPC based concrete.
